Frequently Asked Questions about Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues

Got a question for us that isn’t answered below? Don’t panic – send it in to us using the handy form on this page and we may just answer it right here. Or we may not.

Which one of you is Derick Watts?

Neither of us is – Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues is Nic Smal and Gareth Allison.

Wait, so who is Derick Watts?

Derek Watts is one of the most famous faces on South African television – he’s well-known for hosting & producing a show called Carte Blanche that’s been on air for over 20 years. We changed the spelling in case he got mad and wanted to sue us – turns out he’s a super nice guy and even made a cameo appearance in one of our videos.

How did you come up with the name then?

When we put out our very first video, we realised that we needed some sort of name to release it under; “Nic & Gareth” didn’t sound that exciting, to be honest. We came up with the name on the spur of the moment – we wanted to describe the feeling we used to get as kids upon hearing the show’s iconic theme music start at 7pm on a Sunday night. This effectively meant that the weekend was over and it was time to go to bed. In hindsight, perhaps we should have chosen a shorter name – oh well.

How did Gareth and Nic meet?

In the front row of a Danny K concert, and it was friendship at first sight.

Which camera do you use to film your videos?

We’ve used a lot of different cameras so far, from Canon to RED to Sony to Blackmagic, and even an iPhone on a few occasions. The Canon 5D MKIII is the most common one we use, though.

Who animates the Hippo & Croc and Chat Sandwich cartoons?

Nic does. He also edits our videos, although we have also worked with a few other editors in the past.

Which program do you use to animate them?

Toon Boom Animate Pro.

I have a great idea for a parody song – I’ve even written some lyrics! Can I send it to you?

Thanks for thinking of us, but truth is we have more than enough ideas of our own right now – why not film it yourself? That’s how this whole thing started for us, by filming a silly idea we had. Good luck!
